Who is Tarkine Models?

Tarkine Models is a small home hobby business created by myself, Patrick with support from my wife Holly. It is based in the city of Burnie, Tasmania, which is a short drive from the “Tarkine” area.

Tarkine Models’ origins started in 2018 when I was asked by a local railway modeller to make a throttle pocket for the NCE Powercab controller as he knew I had a 3D printer. I happily took on the challenge; after a few designs I settled on a product that had advantages over the competition and that I would be happy with. Fast forward to the middle of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020, and with support of my amazing wife, created an eBay store and our own website.

My first products released were the “Cab Grab” range of throttle pockets for NCE and Digitrax. Little did I imagine that from just one request, would spawn a something where I have hobbiests ordering from over Australia and the world.

How long is the warranty period on your products?

Tarkine Models offers 12 months warranty on all products to be free from manufacturing defects and issues. Breakages due to abuse or mistreatment of the products do not fall under the terms of this warranty. Accidental breakage of resin parts can occur, see the next FAQ below about replacements. For more infomation see the Shipping & Returns page.

If you purchased a first generation CAB GRAB to suit NCE (all purchases before May 2020) you should have recieved a free replacement/upgrade to the Gen2 CAB GRAB to suit NCE, due to an issue that developed with a number of the first generation models. If you purchased your first generation model from Leading Edge Electronics Burnie and have had an issue with it, please contact us to arrange a replacment.

resin Kits and parts - how do i use them?

Preparation: Simply remove any supports / sprue with modelling side or flush cutters. Hobby knives may also be useful. Upon removing the supports from the resin part, file and sand as you would do with any normal plastic model kit. Once you are happy with the result you may need to post-cure your parts. Refer to the instruction manual for your product to see if this applies to your particular parts.

Post-curing your resin parts: This process is very simple, and will harden your resin parts so that they are not as soft and malleable; this will also reduce the smell of the parts (once painted the parts should no longer emit an odour).

To post-cure the parts, simply expose them to UV light for a while. This can be as simple as leaving them for 1-2 hours in sunlight by a non-tinted window or outside. You may notice a slight colour change in the parts as they cure. DO NOT expose parts to excessive UV / sunlight as this will cause parts to become over-cured and potentially brittle.

Painting: Prime each piece with your preferred model primer. Tamiya, Vallejo and Games Workshop Citadel spray primers have been tested on our products and found to be appropriate. In testing and assembly of our parts and kits, we found the Jo Sonja brand acrylic paints to be of a higher quality and thickness when compared to several other acrylic craft paint brands found locally.

Assembly and glue: Cyanoacrylate also known as super glue is recommended for assembly. Follow your adhesive instructions for proper use.

Tarkine Models does not receive any monetary benefits from any other brands/products mentioned or recommended.

HELP! I ACCIDENTLY BRoKe A PART WHEN BUILDING a resin KIT!

Some of the resin parts in our kits are very fine in nature and detail. We understand that accidents happen, so if you accidently break a resin part, please contact us for a FREE replacement part, just pay postage/shipping costs. Please note that replacement resin parts may need to be produced on demand, so a small delay in sending the part out to you may occur. Colours may also change.

What money currency value are products in?

All prices on this site are in Australian Dollars.

Do you have a brick and motar store i can visit?

No, as Tarkine Models is a small business based out of a home, we are unable to provide our own storefront. However if you scroll down the main home page you will see a list of retailers who stock our products if you would like to see them in person. Alternatively, if you would like to see our products for sale at your local store, ask your hobby shop to get in contact with us to open a wholesale account.

What are your products made from and can i recycle them?

All of our products are 3D printed with materials that can be of PLA, PETG, or UV cured resin (with the exception of various merchandise such as mugs, clothing etc). Check with your local waste management centre to see if you can recycle these materials.

Almost all of our packaging is recyclable! Paper and cardboard can go into your normal recycling bin. Plastic bags including zip-lock bags can be placed in your local REDcycle drop off points (most Coles and Woolworths supermarkets in Australia).

Where can I find a copy of your Instruction Manuals?

Instruction Manuals are available for download HERE

Do you produce commission works?

Not really; while I do dabble in some requests from local modellers, my life is busy enough working a full-time day job, running this small business, and trying to build my own model railway.

Are your resin products safe to handle?

To assist in removing the print supports/sprue as well as general part clean-up, the resin parts may not be post-cured. This may cause a strong resin smell being emitted from the parts. Although liquid 3D printing resins are toxic, potentially irritating skin and giving off harmful fumes, they are safe to use in the solid form that you receive if the appropriate safety precautions are taken. For your health and safety, Tarkine Models recommends preparing the model in a well ventilated area and handle parts with gloves until after you have ‘post-cured’ your parts, prior to assembly and painting. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for resins used are available for download here.
